Louisiana Senate President Joel Chaisson issued a proclamation calling a special election to fill the District 24 seat being vacated by Senator Don Cravins, Jr., who is leaving the state legislature to serve as director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship in Washington, D.C. The primary election is set for Saturday, April 4, 2009, with the date for the general election scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2009. Qualifying for the District 24 seat begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2009 and ends at 5 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2009. The election dates for the District 24 seat will occur in conjunction with regularly scheduled municipal primary and general elections, making it possible to reduce the costs associated with special elections. The selected dates will also allow for the election of a new Senator to represent the citizens of District 24 as soon as possible.
